JCRC Statement on the Killing of Tyre Nichols and Release of Video
The imminent release of another video showing a Black man being beaten by agents of our government breaks my heart. Today, after Shabbat begins, our country will—yet again—have access to such a video. From information released so far, footage of Tyre Nichols’ murder will be enough to sicken each of us.
As we lament the horrific events that occurred in Memphis, we appreciate the Memphis Police Department and its leadership for deciding to quickly release the video. We appreciate them and the city in their speed in bringing legal charges (second-degree murder) against the attackers. We also appreciate all law enforcement agents in this country who continue to serve with dignity, who bravely protect the public, and who hold one another accountable for wrongdoing. Such appreciation is important, but it is accompanied by grief.
This weekend will be a time for mourning; for many, this Shabbat will be a time for prayer; and for all, it will be a time to share a hope for change and action in the future. The Jewish community stands with its Black allies in a commitment to ending the disproportionate violence perpetrated against people of color.
