Jay and Sue Price Honored for Selfless Generosity

Before several hundred supporters of regional nonprofit organizations on June 14, the Greater Cincinnati Planned Giving Council honored Sue and Jay Price, long-time volunteers and donors to the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati, with their Voices of Giving Award. The award pays tribute to those Greater Cincinnatians for their selfless generosity in making a bequest or planned gift to a favorite charitable organization. Why I Volunteer: Aaron Herzig

For the Federation’s “Why I Volunteer” series, a volunteer is asked for a one-sentence answer to the question:  “Why do you volunteer in the Jewish community? Here’s what Aaron Herzig said:

“My Jewish identity is important to me, and I want my kids’ Jewish identity to be important to them.  So that means being involved in the Jewish organizations in this community.”

Aaron Herzig is a co-team leader of the Create Your Jewish Legacy team for Rockdale Temple.  He is also on its Board of Directors, and has served as chair of its Membership Committee. Asked at a recent Create Your Jewish Legacy seminar.

Meet Richard and Mona Kerstine and watch their video

As newlyweds, Richard and Mona Kerstine arrived in Cincinnati in 1961. They have since participated as volunteers and leaders in many of its Jewish, civic, and cultural organizations. The Kerstines have left a lasting effect on this community, through their leadership and generosity, and would like to keep that going, through a legacy gift.

Our friends and donors to Cincinnati’s Jewish community are beginning to feel the buzz about endowments, ie money or other financial assets donated to nonprofits. Through the Create Your Jewish Legacy program and ongoing conversations our many agencies, organizations, and synagogues are having, we as a community are beginning to understand that establishing endowments has lasting, powerful effects on our community’s future. So it is not surprising that our community’s endowment funds are growing.

There are so many ways to make an endowment happen. Many people have their estate make a distribution to initiate a fund, while others get started during their lives and build up the fund over time. Some even start their funds now and add to them later through their wills, or designations from their IRA or life insurance. Our development team at the Jewish Federation can easily help you with the how. Let’s look at the frequently less-examined question: why.
