JCRC Statement on Shooting Inside Fifth Third Center on Fountain Square
The Jewish Community Relations Council of the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati stands in solidarity with Cincinnati’s Downtown community, first responders, and especially the victims and families coping with the aftermath of yesterday’s horrific act of violence in the center of our city. We mourn the lives that were lost to this act of senseless violence. May their memories be for a blessing.
We echo Mayor John Cranley’s remarks below and we are committed to working with our friends and neighbors across the city in pursuit of a safer community. Tragically, mass shootings in movie theaters, malls, schools, workplaces, and other everyday settings have become all too commonplace, but we agree with Mayor Cranley that we must not allow them to become normalized. Reversing this disturbing trend will require a collective investment in change. As such, we will continue to advocate for enhanced safety measures and for common sense gun safety reform, and we invite other faith and ethnic communities to join us. To start, we call on our state representatives to adopt Governor Kasich’s proposal, which includes six sensible proposals that would help keep weapons from falling into dangerous hands.
Statement from Mayor John Cranley
“First and foremost, our hearts and prayers go out to the victims and their families. Cincinnati’s finest police and firefighters acted swiftly and courageously, and we are indebted to their heroic service. They clearly prevented a much worse tragedy and loss of life.
“Random mass shootings, which plague our Nation, are not normal and we as a Country can’t allow them to be normalized. Our Country is the only first-world nation with this level of mass shootings. This is an American problem, that we as Americans must solve by putting ideology last and human life first.
“Please join me in praying for the victims, praying for our Country and join me in this fight to end senseless gun violence. Our hearts are broken today.”
