Preserving our History: The Scoop in October
This monthly report from CEO Shep Englander features topics of interest to the Cincinnati Jewish community and the work of the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati.
Welcoming New Top Talent. It was great to welcome five new agency executives to our community at my home recently. Hayley and I invited the new leaders, along with board members and senior staff from each of their organizations, so members of Jewish Cincinnati could meet them—and vice versa. In addition to the original honorees, Laura Baum (Rockwern), Oscar Jarnicki (Jewish Home of Cincinnati), Rachel Kaplan (Cincinnati Hillel), Amnon Maggid (Emissary for the Jewish Federation), and Liz Vogel (Jewish Family Service), we were also happy to welcome Max Yamson, who just finished his first summer as Executive Director of Camp Livingston, and Rabbi Noah Ferro, who recently started as the Rabbi of Northern Hills Synagogue.
I am impressed by each of them. They bring needed expertise and passion. And it’s worth noting that we recruited two professionals this year to Cincinnati from the coasts—something we couldn’t have dreamed of even a few years ago!
Gaining Insights. We signed a contract with Brandeis University to conduct our next demographic study of Jewish Cincinnati. They will implement the study this winter, which will give us an updated and detailed portrait of our community’s makeup. We will be able to see how our community has changed in the last ten years and how we compare to other Jewish communities—valuable data and insights as we plan for 2030.
Preserving our History. Congratulations to David and Nancy Wolf! The Holocaust & Humanity Center has formally renamed its organization the Nancy & David Wolf Holocaust & Humanity Center (HHC) in recognition of the couple’s generous and inspiring lead gift toward the move to the Cincinnati Museum Center.
The innovative new center, which will open in 2019, will triple the exhibition space and offer enhanced programming—all in the city’s largest cultural institution, with more than 1.4 million visitors per year! HHC already has a stellar national reputation for their brilliant work in preserving the history and lessons of the Holocaust. The new center will multiply the impact of those lessons throughout our region Cincinnati. Celebrating 10 Years. Congratulations to the Mayerson JCC on its tenth anniversary at the Amberley Village campus. I was honored to reflect at their annual meeting last month about how we selected this location and organized and launched the capital campaign that built this wonderful campus. I’m so glad I arrived in Cincinnati in 2004 in time to be able to help convene and coordinate the efforts of our many community organizations to build what has truly become the center of Jewish life in Cincinnati.
