Dec 6 CEO Update: Seizing Our Momentum
Dear friends,
This year, our community has faced extraordinary challenges—and embraced extraordinary opportunities. In the wake of October 7, we’ve witnessed a remarkable “Surge” in engagement and connection, with more than half of our community seeking deeper ways to get involved and build connections with others. This renewed desire for greater involvement in our community isn’t just a moment—it’s a movement, inspiring us to rethink how we engage, plan, and support one another.
When I think about this movement, I think about the quiet but profound ways we show up for one another. One example is our indigent burial program, which ensures that every Jew in our community receives a dignified burial, regardless of financial circumstances. I received a heartfelt note from a grieving family: “I didn’t know what we would do, and you took that burden from us. I will never forget your kindness.” This note reminded me of how our collective efforts provide comfort and dignity when it’s needed most.
To me, this perfectly illustrates how Federation is creating a vibrant Jewish ecosystem in Cincinnati and beyond—fostering collaboration, amplifying resources, and sustaining programs that address our community’s most pressing needs.
Four More Ways We Made an Impact Together
- Strengthening Security and Safety: This year, we tripled our investment in security to keep our Jewish spaces places of comfort and connection. We expanded our Security Guards Program, increasing the number of off-duty officers protecting our synagogues, schools, and our Jewish institutions, especially during Shabbat and holidays. A comprehensive upgrade of security cameras across local Jewish nonprofits is underway, enhancing coverage and clarity to better protect our community.
- Combating Hate and Antisemitism: Through the Cohen Family Leaders in Light Institute, 19 local civic and interfaith leaders deepened their understanding of antisemitism, extremism, and bigotry. Earlier this year, participants gained the confidence and tools to equip their networks and communities to address hate. Now, these leaders are implementing advocacy projects that inspire real change. Participants include leaders such as a State Representative, a Superintendent of Schools, and professionals in fields ranging from diversity and inclusion, education, law, and urban design. They embody the expertise and influence this program cultivates.
- Helping the People of Israel: This past campaign year, we achieved a record in individual giving, meeting our fundraising goals while also raising an additional $5.32 million for Israel emergency efforts. To date, 82% of these funds have been strategically allocated: Phase I (59%) provided critical emergency aid through The Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA), including medical supplies, food, shelter, and bereavement support; Phase II, Round 1 (13%) funded trauma recovery, infrastructure rebuilding, and support for combat veterans; and Phase II, Round 2 (10%), recently approved, focuses on mental health services, vocational retraining, and youth resilience initiatives. Every dollar has been thoughtfully allocated to foster recovery and resilience. Learn more about the allocations.
- Lifting Lives: The Let There Be Light mural, brought to life by local artists, enriched our cityscape while reconnecting participants like Lexi with her Jewish identity, sparking pride and purpose in the next generation. Cincinnati Jewish Interest-Free Loans empowered families to achieve their dreams—whether purchasing a home, expanding a small business, or affording fertility treatments to grow their families. In coordination with the Mayerson JCC, we delivered heartfelt notes to our former Israeli emissaries serving in the IDF, reminding them they are always in our thoughts.
Shabbat Shalom,
