Israeli Chronicles — Connecting Israel & Cincinnati
Israeli DJ and Social Entrepreneur to Speak about Diversity in Israel at Mayerson JCC
Mizrahi Jews—those who came to Israel from the Middle East and North Africa—were initially pushed to the Israeli periphery geographically, socially, and culturally. On April 19, DJ, lawyer, writer, and social entrepreneur Ophir Toubul will explore how younger generations are repositioning themselves in Israeli society, bringing with them an alternative form of moderate, multicultural Judaism and a demand for social justice.
Named “One of the Top 40 Inspirational People in Israel” by TimeOut magazine, Toubul founded “Café Gibraltar,” an online publication aimed at enhancing cultural diversity. He created and currently operates “Tangier,” a stage for literature and poetry by writers from the periphery, and is a founding member and DJ of music crew “Laissez-Passer—Music without Borders.”
Join Toubul for “The Mizrahi Sound —Rhythms of the Second Israel,” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19, 2016, at the Mayerson JCC. Visit jewishcincinnati.org/israelity to RSVP.
This presentation is part of the 2016 Israelity speaker series, “All Sorts of Israel.” This year’s featured speakers will bring different Israeli perspectives to Cincinnati. The series is brought to you by the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati in collaboration with the Jewish Community Relations Council and the Mayerson JCC.
