Hate Groups in the Wake of Charlottesville: A Community Leadership Briefing
The JCRC, in collaboration with the American Jewish Committee Cincinnati, the Holocaust & Humanity Center, and SAFE Cincinnati, recently invited leaders from across Cincinnati to a briefing about the status of hate groups in the United States. About 130 people attended the event, including leaders from the Jewish, Islamic, and Christian communities, the African American and Hispanic communities, high schools and universities, synagogues, churches, and mosques, and many other civic organizations, as well as elected officials.
This diverse representation reflects the fact that this issue—the continuing presence in our community of hatred, discrimination and intolerance—is an issue that impacts all of us, irrespective of our religion, ethnicity, or sexual orientation. The leaders who attended the briefing are committed to standing up and speaking out against those whose actions and words in Charlottesville and elsewhere run counter to the values of our country and the values of the diverse traditions represented here today.
Our hope is that the event will stimulate an ongoing dialogue among the diverse groups that were in the room. We firmly believe that this type of dialogue and conversation will ultimately prevail against the evil that we saw on display in Charlottesville.
The program was moderated by Dan Hurley, Interim Director for the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. He has also worked with Local 12 News for 36 years and produced weekly segments that used history to frame contemporary issues. The panel included Oren Segal, Director of the Anti-Defamation League’s Center on Extremism; Joseph Levin, Jr., co-founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center; and two supervisory special agents from the FBI.
Moved to see such a strong turnout from all across our city at our panel about the status of hate groups. We must speak out together. pic.twitter.com/WzPlbFDyez
